Earlier this week, Sung Hanbin from zb1 made his solo debut, titled undead, and i have to say it’s gotta be one of the best male solo songs ive ever heard. A powerful, anthemic and intense track, reminiscent of the concept/genres in 2nd gen (vixx, shinee etc). I had high expectations and he had greatly exceeded them with this debut. To think he is an idol who has only debuted for 3 years, yet he is fully capable of commanding the stage all for himself, with performance abilities like a veteran idol.
His album dead:alive is nothing short of a masterpiece. It has such a luring horror/dark concept, with themes of death/rebirth and breaking boundaries. Musically it is even more phenomenal. Every song has its own unique style with a wide variety of genres, yet the album still managed to be very cohesive. Its like every song is a different chapter of a dark and empowering novel. Truly one of the best albums of this year with no skips for me.
This solo debut has also allowed hanbin to unleash his full potential. He has always been known for his strong performance and dance capabilities as a main dancer in zb1, specialising in tutting and waacking (which he had incorporated tutting into his album intro). However, aside from serving stellar performance and choreography as expected, he has also proved that he is a very strong vocalist as well, where undead is a highly difficult song to sing with multiple high notes in the chorus. He really took the all rounder title seriously, and he showed us so much more he can achieve.
With such a high quality solo debut album + title track, if he continues with this kind of direction and artistry down the road, im very confident he will be the representative solo artist of 5th gen in years to come. I can tell his team has put in a great amount of effort into this. Do give his new song/album a listen!
