Disclaimer: Please to not hate or downgrade any act (K-pop or Southeast Asian) in the comment section under my post as this intention of this post is to discuss the rising dominance of acts from Southeast Asia and K-pop acts facing possible competition in the future.
Recently, I had seen a video on TikTok from a user discussing the most mentioned celebrities at fashion shows in Paris with those celebrities being mostly Thai actors and actresses. She cites how Korean celebrities or idols associated with K-pop tend to dominate Paris Fashion Week and explaining the shift to the dominance of Thai celebrities. I had noticed this as well as during Paris Fashion, the most mentioned celebrities of the week usually be Korean celebrities, K-pop idols, and Western celebrities and seeing the shift towards Thai celebrities was extremely new. I had noticed a video going around on social media about Youtubers critiquing Jennie’s latest performances to which there some comments praising SB19 while downgrading K-pop. Matter of fact, in some discussions of the rising popular of Southeast Asian acts, there tends to comment about K-pop and not in a very good way due to the quality of talent being compared of acts from the K-pop industry and Southeast Asian industry. Not only that but the complete shift of local acts in Southeast Asian countries like Thailand and the Philippines dominating their homegrown charts due to local audiences shifting from K-pop and Western Pop.
I am aware that the K-pop industry and industries in Southeast Asia are extremely different as K-pop had cemented its status throughout the past five generations while Southeast Asian industries like Thailand and the Philippines are still growing step by step. Not only that, but K-pop is consider more of a popular niche internationally and have had groups sell out stadiums on the international scene as well as on the domestic Asian scene. However, certain critiques and doubts about Southeast Asian acts have been applied to acts in K-pop as well as for example a lot of fans had felt that no one would surpass Bigbang and SNSD in popularity due to how huge those groups were during their generation yet BTS and Blackpink had achieved success worldwide and had achieved accolades that were considered impossible for K-pop groups. During the second generation, K-pop was mocked and called “weird” by locals on the international scene yet had grown into this hugely niche global phenomenon. With the dominance of local charting, appearances at U.S. festivals, and the take over at Paris Fashion Week, could Southeast Asian acts give K-pop possible competition in the future whether in Asia, internationally, or both?
