I’ve only been following kpop since 5th gen so I wanted to ask older fans about this. Recently, I’ve seen a lot of doomposting about the state of the industry and the music it is producing. There has been a lot of complaints about too much english in songs and songs being far too short. A lot of it has been towards the sound of recent HYBE girl group releases like It’s Me, Celebration/Boompala and Katseye (I don’t think they qualify as kpop but they seem to be associated with all the complaining). People seem to hate a perceived increase in western and corporate influence.
How much truth is there in these complaints? As far as western influence, I know that kpop music has always drawn heavy inspiration from western artists including many black artists. Is a lot of it just nostalgia for the music of people’s childhoods and hate for new music/trends which happens for every generation of people? I’d think that any unpopular experimental sounds from the past were probably forgotten so I’d think people only remember the highs.
Edit: People have also been complaining about the degradation of the vocal talent in general, not sure of the truth in this.
