What’s to applaud here is that the (저출산고령위원회) Presidential Committee on Ageing Society and Population Policy held a public, nation-wide policy contest back in May and actually implemented some of the policies suggested by young people: https://m.news.nate.com/view/20260426n15065 https://mbiz.heraldcorp.com/article/10806615 Here are the incoming changes. Benefits will total 200K+ USD from birth to 34 years of age if you include the paternal leave payouts. – 혼인지원금 Marriage support = Couples who register their marriage will get a 1 million KRW ($730) payout. Upgraded from the current policy of providing 500K KRW ($360) worth of tax reimbursements. They accounted for the fact that the benefits aren’t really felt by low-income young couples. – Child benefit payouts (cash grants + basic income) totalling up to $50K USD, and phasing-out of 첫만남이용권, or First Encounter Vouchers starting July 1, 2027. This came in response to public suggestions that cash is better-felt by young couples than voucher handouts. Starting in July 1, 2027, the vouchers will be combined with 부모급여 (parental allowance – currently 1 million KRW/month for year 0, 500K/month for 1yo babies) and also with 아동수당 (child allowance – currently 100K KRW/month up to 13 years of age), and simplified into 아이맞이지원금 (Childbirth Grant) + 아동기본수당 (Basic Income for Children) – 아이맞이 지원금, Childbirth Grant = Cash payouts of 10 million KRW ($7300) for first child, 12 million KRW ($8700) for the second child and 15 million KRW ($11,000) for the third. An additional 5 million KRW ($3700) for any child living in government designated rural areas. – 아동기본수당, Basic Income for Children = combines the current parental and child allowances, guaranteeing 200K KRW/month for each child, divided in half between cash and local vouchers. 300K if living in rural areas. – 우리아이자립펀드 Children’s Asset-Building Fund – Under this system, when parents deposit a certain amount into an account under their child’s name, the government provides a matching contribution of up to 1.2 million won per year, depending on the household income level. Savings can be accumulated from birth until the child reaches the age of 18. For children from households with an income at or below 50% of the median income, the government provides 1.2 million won annually, regardless of the parents’ contribution. For households between 50% and 100% of the median income, if parents deposit 500,000 won annually, the government adds 1 million won. For those between 100% and 150% of the median income, both parents and the government contribute 1 million won each per year. If the household income exceeds 150% of the median income, no government matching support is provided. The government expects that considering long-term accumulation and investment returns, children will be able to build an asset worth approximately 60 million won to a maximum of 100 million won by the age of 18. More information here: https://www.kbmaeil.com/article/20260828500419 The current 6+6 parental leave support policy will be maintained, which hands out up to 43K USD over 12 months if both parents take leave. If the father takes at least 3 months of leave, you qualify for the 6-month extension (meaning both parents have taken at least 3 months of parental leave, or under eligible single-parent/disabled child conditions), bringing the combined couple maximum to 88 million KRW, or 64K USD for a full 18-month leave. Dads taking paternal leave has surged from 5% in 2015 to 39% in 2026 as a result. Max central government financial benefits = 1 million KRW (marriage grant) + 20 million KRW (Grant) + 46.8 million KRW (basic income) + 100 million KRW (child fund) + 88 million KRW (parental leave) = 255.8 million Korean Won (KRW), which is approximately $186,000 USD depending on current market exchange rates. The total amount will exceed 200K when you account for local subsidies and grants. submitted by /u/rdh2dmd |
