Since I was mainly travelling around Gangwon-do this time, public transport wasn’t always that convenient, and I was pretty short on time. So I decided to rent a car from the start.1. You’ll need an IDP You’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to rent a car in Korea. I used an IDP issued in Hong Kong. There are quite a few services online offering IDPs from places like Cambodia or Indonesia, but I’d be careful with those. Korea (and Japan) may not accept all of them, so it’s worth checking before you book anything. 2. SK Rent-a-Car vs. Lotte The two big rental companies in Korea are SK Rent-a-Car and Lotte Rent-a-Car. I went with SK and booked directly through their website. I paid around RMB 1,500 for four days, including insurance. 3. Picking up and returning the car I picked up and returned the car at Incheon Airport Terminal 2. After collecting my luggage, I went down to B1 and found the rental counter. They asked for my passport, Hong Kong driving licence, IDP and credit card. Once everything was sorted, they gave me the car key and I just went to the parking lot and drove off. For SK, the cars are parked in Parking Lot 119 at T2. Returning the car was even easier. I drove back to the T2 parking lot, handed the keys to the staff, and that was basically it. 4. Hi-Pass and insurance I decided not to get Hi-Pass. From what I understood, the Hi-Pass fee is around 30,000 KRW and it isn’t refundable, so I didn’t think it was worth it for my trip. I did get the extra insurance, though, and honestly, I’d recommend it. It made the whole trip feel a lot less stressful. Overall, the pick-up and return process was really quick and straightforward. The only downside was that the staff didn’t really explain much, especially when it came to things like how to pay for fuel and how highway tolls work. I definitely made a few mistakes along the way 😂, but once I figured everything out, driving around Gangwon-do was actually a really nice experience. submitted by /u/Icy_Development9734 |
