1) Cortis do not want a typical kpop fandom.
I think their management is aiming for a global audience that includes casual listeners, not just people who are already into K-pop. They seem to be following a similar route to BLACKPINK, where the goal is for people to recognize the group even if they don’t really follow K-pop. They may be going down the Blackpink route but as a group instead. I was shocked to first find out that Lisa was a kpop idol. I didn’t know her as that. You get my reference?
2) They make catchy music.
In my humble opinion, they haven’t made very exceptional music compared to western artists, I mean, considering their choice of music production. But they do make catchy music, it’s the sort of music that makes you subconsciously sing that specific part of whatever song it is. Like “Go!” In their song Go!. They’re making use of a music production style like Rihanna/Tyla. Make it as catchy as possible, that even if a person may not be very interested in the song, that catchy part will play over and over in their mind.
3) Cortis are victims of misdirected hate.
I think people are rather angry at their fans and not the boys themselves. Firstly Coers have become Army juniors. That fandom has quickly become insufferable and cringe. But then again, that’s normal behaviour for kpop fandoms. Secondly, I know about the kpop industry’s racists tendencies but cortis of all kpop groups does not deserve to be accused of racism. Their trap and hip-hop sound has deep Black roots, and that genre has been criticized for years. I can understand why some Black fans feel frustrated when Black artists are often labeled “ghetto” for that same style, but people react much more positively when the cute Korean guys do it. Even if Cortis gives credit to the artists and culture that influenced them, that doesn’t erase the fact that Black people are still judged differently for the same kind of music. So I do understand why it can feel unfair to see Korean idols receive praise for a sound that Black artists have historically been criticized for. At the same time, I think some people are directing that frustration at Cortis themselves when the bigger issue is how society treats Black artists differently. You can dislike a fandom or criticize industry double standards, but you can’t control who people should choose to listen to. Hence i feel its very useless to hold a grudge against them because of the people who listen to them.
4) You won’t ever catch those boys being racist.
Why do I say so? “Because they work with black people…” I know we’ve heard that statement too many times that it’s become annoying but it actually speaks for a lot of things. Firstly Cortis members are media trained gen z idols, so they’re probably very aware of how quickly controversial behavior can damage a career. Secondly, they’ve been given a lot of exposure to black culture and the Western market. I think BIGHIT has probably done a lot of research on Black artistry and the culture behind hip-hop and trap music. Since Cortis’ sound is heavily influenced by genres with deep Black roots, the company has likely exposed the members to the artists and culture that inspired that sound. So I’m sure they won’t ever make a career threatening mistake. People may try to find a reason to cancel them but I don’t think they’ll succeed in that.
5) They are not self produced.
I hope nobody actually believes they’re self produced. It a PR stunt, it has to be. Do you think a company as big as hybe would risk having newborn rookies making their own music? That’s for established artists like BTS. BTS are allowed to direct how their music should go because they have a dedicated fandom who will buy whatever crap they make.(I’m not throwing shade). I’m just saying that hybe can trust that they’ll be sure to get their profits no matter what BTS makes, whether it be good or bad. Cortis just debuted, I don’t think that they have a very loyal fandom as yet. However I do think that they do contribute somehow but that may have VERY minor roles. I’m sure the boys do make their own music but it’s definitely never been released or perhaps unofficial songs.
6) Lngshot vs Cortis discourse.
People like to argue that if lngshot had come from a bigger company they’d be just as big as cortis. That’s true actually, their music is nice too. But I think jaypark is doing pretty well with marketing the lngshot boys. Although they don’t have as much of a budget as BIGHIT, I think fans are very weird for trying to make them out to be some sort of underdogs. Lngshot is not that group. Funding may not be as huge as BIGHIT but still they have a good starting ground. Them debuting under jaypark doesn’t make them underdogs. They are not coming from a completely irrelevant figure or company. People had already been talking about them before their debut, not good talk but atleast they weren’t ignored. Like some other unknown groups. I think Shotties feel that lngshot coming from a smaller group makes them anymore special and different. It doesn’t, they’re also just another kpop group, just like cortis or illit. However, it does matter where jaypark wants their careers to go.
7) Their experimental music will work for them.
No, I’m not glazing. But this means that they’re allowed to move across genres without confusing people. However this is also affected by a number of things. Hopefully as grow in the music industry, they’ll be able to come up with their own distinct sound and actually find what works best for them and really defines them.
Anyway, those are just my thoughts. Feel free to disagree or add your own opinions because I’m curious to hear other perspectives.
