There’s ILLIT of course, my favorite overall. It’s all just so girly, I can’t not be put in a better mood when one of their songs come on. Especially since Do the Dance, the catharsis that song puts me through is so crazy. Instant attitude adjuster. And I like how they’ve gone back and forth between super upbeat (Magnetic/Do The Dance) and more mellow and calm (Cherish/Not Cute Anymore) in their title tracks, and yet they all are undeniably ILLIT flavored. Almond Chocolate was their first Japanese release, which could easily be an MG anime outro, and then they released Toki Yo Tomare which is so cute and addictive. I haven’t always been comfortable embracing my girly side throughout my life, but I’m glad I reached healthy levels of self acceptance before ILLIT came around so I can enjoy their music properly.
Then there’s H2H, whose music I’ve had on loop so much to the point I forgot they were still a Rookie group. Congrats to them (and CORTIS) for winning Best New Artist at MAMAs, absolutely deserved! The Chase and FOCUS are loved by me for the same reason: their almost hypnotic choruses. Also, you can see the choreographers are being more conscious of the group formations so one member isn’t hidden in the back for the majority of the song now, so we get to see everyone’s faces more easily. STYLE was the song that made me wake up to the group. If they keep making songs like this, I’m hooked for life.
BabyMonster has been great too. Hot Sauce and Psycho this year show both the Baby and Monster sides of them. I think Forever is my favorite of their songs, but Drip makes me reconsider my personal ranking every time I hear it. Wishing Rami the best in her recovery!
And then there is KickFlip, who I will use to round out this discussion so this post, that is already really long, won’t become egregiously so. I regret not listening to them sooner. When Band-Aid and My First Love Song were released, I liked them so much that I revisted their past songs from debut to now. I shouldn’t have written off Umm Great the way I did 😭 With this group, it seems the Vocal Line will be the stars, but the Rap Line carries their weight too.
I’m glad all these groups can exist at the same time and all share the same stage. Some are of the belief that 5th Gen has been disappointing on the musical front, but I am staunchly on the other side. There’s so much great stuff out there to listen to.
