I need some help, but I’m not exactly sure where to start

Hello,

So, I don’t exactly know where to start with this, but in short I married into a Korean family, and I have an extremely old fashioned and secretive Korean mother in law. Now, I don’t want you to think I’m here to complain about her, that’s not what this post is about.

The trouble is that she moved to America when she was younger, and lost contact with her family in Korea. Not because she did anything wrong, or that she fled Korea, she’s a native South Korean and got involved with someone in the US Military and moved to the US.

Since she’s gotten older, she’s started to talk about Korea a lot, and has a deep sadness when it comes to her family since she lost touch when moving from place to place in the US. She used to be in touch with her family a lot, and has a ton of old letters with old addresses, but most of those places don’t exist anymore.

I want to try and find her family for her, but her secretiveness, and letting us view documents related to her, and her family is almost impossible. Which I think she is doing because she’s afraid she’s going to find out some of her family members have passed away over the years and feels shame about not being there.

Now the thing is, I do have a picture of an address from one of the old letters, and the name of a family member. Is there anyway, for me to track where they have moved to, since I was told there is a record of where every person moves to in Korea.

What would I need to access this information, or what would be the best steps going forward with this information. How hard would it be to track someone down doing this?

On a side note I do have a friend who is currently teaching English in Korea, but I’m not sure how friendly they would be to having an American ask questions about a family who isn’t his.

Any help would be appreciated.
