Hello, I love all the Korean food I have tried, and generally like to try all sorts of foods from around the world, however sadly I’ve developed an intolerance of the whole “nightshade” (solanaceae) family of plants which means I can’t eat anything containing chilli (or related things like tomatoes, paprika, sweet peppers, potatoes, aubergine/eggplant, goji berries). As you can imagine this narrows down my choices as a lot of Korean food often contains chilli or is designed to be eaten with chilli containing condiments like kimchi. To top it all, I also have a gluten intolerance, which restricts my choices even further (I can, of course, use gluten free substitutes for some ingredients, such as soy sauce, at least).
Obviously I’m aware there are plenty of Korean dishes that either don’t have any chilli/gluten/etc or that can easily be made without it, but looking for recipes can be tedious as I have to trawl through tons of unsuitable recipes to find the gems! Plus it’s nice to have personal recommendations from people who love those foods. I have made a few dishes, for instance galbi, kimbap, a few banchans (mainly namuls), but would love more ideas, especially things which are similar to classic dishes that normally contain chill (I’ve found a few recipes for non-spicy tteokbokki I plan to try very soon!).
So please hit me with any recipe suggestions! I’m pretty good at cooking and I can get a range of Asian ingredients, plus I have an adventurous palate, so they don’t just have to be “simple” recipes or things suited to western tastes (also I do really like spicy flavours despite chilli not liking me, so spiciness from things like ginger, pepper etc is fine!). Also welcome would be ideas about what I might be able to order in a Korean restaurant (there are a few in my city but I haven’t eaten in any as I don’t know whether I could eat anything!).
