I’ve always wanted to throw a big, farm table-style Korean BBQ feast in my garden, and I’ve finally decided to make it happen for my 40th birthday in September.
I live in the Midwest, but I fell hard for Korean food when my husband taught in Korea for two years after college. I’ve traveled the world for the sole purpose of eating, and Korean food is my favorite. I’ve introduced it to my family and friends at small dinner parties, and now I want to go all out.
To prep for the party, I’m growing napa cabbage, Korean radishes, spring onions, and shiso so I can make my own kimchis, ferments, and ssam wraps. I’m ordering the meat from a local farmer to make sure I get all the right cuts. And while I wont be harvesting my own sea salt, I’ve definitely been tempted, lol.
The part I love most about Korean BBQ is the experience of cooking the meat right at the table, that interactive, communal energy is what I want to recreate. But that’s where I’m hitting a wall.
I’ll invite 40–50 guests, and I just can’t afford to buy 10–12 tabletop butane grills. I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find a cost-effective solution, and I haven’t seen any examples of people doing Korean BBQ at this scale without a burner at every table.
So, has anyone pulled off something like this before? Or do you have ideas for how to give people that cook-it-yourself feeling without needing a dozen burners?
