Is there anything good about being the oldest member in the group?

Think about it!

  • For most groups, you’re expected to be the leader…but you can opt out of this as many do (Nayeon TWICE is the oldest but JiHyo is the leader, Le Sserafim Sakura is the oldest but Chaewon is the leader, etc). If I recall correctly, SaRa from 9Muses was at one point the leader but not the oldest and then the company changed it so that the oldest would be the leader because they thought the others weren’t taking SaRa seriously…
  • You have to be the most responsible
  • You have to take care of everyone and dot on them but they won’t do the same for you
  • You’re expected to buy stuff for the younger ones
  • You get made fun of for being older
  • If there are members who are in highschool, you’re kind of expected to parent them: Park Gyuri of Kara and HyoMin of T-ARA have both talked about how they basically raised their respective group’s maknaes. There’s a variety show with Kara members early on in their career. Gyuri is only 21 (’88) at the same, but Jiyoung is 15 (’94). Jiyoung has an exam at school that day. She wakes up last (18 year old Hara goes to wake her up reminding her she has an exam today). Gyuri is making Jiyoung breakfast. They set the table for her and escort her out. They even make fun of these by bowing down to her and wishing her good luck and calling her unnie lol.

It seems kinda exhausting tbh lol. On the other hand, being the maknae seems like it’s the best time ever. Everyone thinks you’re cute, you get a few people buying you everything, and you’re never blamed for anything and everyone else takes care of your stuff. Lmao.
