How is it that older style 2 story + flat deck homes can get away with flat roofs in the snow?

After battling the endless snowstorms in Jeongseon, Danyang, Yeongwol and Chuncheon for 3 days, I was eating breakfast in Jinju, I looked across at the 2 story family house with the roof picnic deck and wondered why the snow weight isn’t a problem here. Actually almost all of the buildings including my hotel are flat roof and I’m looking down at a city scape of flat roof business blocks.

If I think about the effort and energy we put into sloping in New England or in Europe (Swiss buildings are almost triangles sometimes)….how does Korea get away without sloped roofs?
