You know in kpop there’s always discourse about certain groups that change concept or sound and a portion of people claim that “they fell off” or “aren’t the same”, “the new them is not coherent with who they’re as a group” etc. And yes while I believe criticism without hate is something valid, I think that opinions are also diverse and anyone who disagrees with something has every right to do so.
So my question is exactly that: which “they fell off” discourse you disagree with?
My two cents:
StayC is probably the one that comes to mind for me. They’ve always been a group I knew the existence of, knew some songs but never really checked them out. That changed some months ago when I just decided to go through their discography and so I began with the title tracks/MVs
Although I wasn’t really that aware of them, I was aware of some discourse about how some of their more recent stuff wasn’t hitting like their older songs, that they were deviating from their concept and on and on.
So while watching all the MVs, hearing the songs, all I thought about these arguments was “??” lol Like, watching everything back to back, all I saw was a group with a pretty strong cohesive concept/aesthetic , that while they indeed changed from time to time it was still pretty in line with them as a group. It allowed them to explore different facets of the group without feeling repetitive.
But like I said, opinions are opinions so I’m not bad mouthing who disagrees with me (except those who are being obnoxious/hateful about it). So that’s just something I’d like to share and also ask the rest of you
