What are some rap-centered songs that go hard? Like it makes you start bopping your head and you’re completely into the vibe. And after the verse finishes you’re thinking “oh yeah they ate that.” Here are some of my favorites:
1. xikers – Red Sun
It legitimately kills me how underrated xikers are. They release banger after banger and their b-sides are also fire, Red Sun being one of them. I knew the rap line was good, I just didn’t know they were THIS good. The fact that every single rap verse (including the chorus) slaps is a feat in and of itself, I actually can’t choose which verse is my favorite. Minjae opens with his bassy voice that immediately sets the stage, then Sumin has a catchy rasp in his voice that contrasts so well, and in the second verse Yechan sounds nasty in the best way possible, and of course the chorus goes hard. All three of them have such distinct voices it’s so goated. RED SUN RED SUN‼️‼️🔥🔥🗣️🗣️
2. Mark – Fraktsiya (ft. Lee Young Ji)
I love Mark’s rapping voice, it’s so forward and blunt but also playful and versatile. The entire song he eats, he just sounds so effortlessly cool and swag, and the bare production makes his rapping shine even more. I also love how Young Ji’s more grounded voice contrasts really well and gives the song an even more “who the fuck are you” feel that the whole concept is built on. Her “and that’s why people call you delusional” has been stuck in my head. And the way the song just ends with Mark’s “uh, you don’t know this” is so iconic. They’re both so cool.
3. XG – Woke Up
A list like this cannot exist without mentioning this banger. The flow of literally every single verse (even Chisa’s melodic interlude) eats so hard I enjoy every single millisecond of this song. I’m sure everyone has seen a trend of shorter and shorter songs nowadays but honestly this one is an exception, it’s explosive from start to finish and ends on a high note, and I think if they dragged it out longer it would just lose its momentum. Perhaps my favorite verses were Cocona’s, her airy yet pointed tone is just spectacular. I also love Maya’s first verse, it probably has the best flow in this song. They seriously didn’t leave one crumb.
4. Ateez – To The Beat
Admittedly I found the high-pitched “TO THE BEAT MOVE YOUR BODY TO THE BEAT” pretty annoying on first listen, but it’s such a small factor in the grander scheme of the song that it doesn’t bother me anymore. That’s coupled with the fact that Hongjoong and Mingi absolutely served in their respective verses. We don’t really hear Hongjoong rap in a low tone since he’s known for his unique vocal color that is certainly a staple in every Ateez song, so this was a pleasant surprise and he still slayed. And of course Mingi shines in the second verse that he has all to himself. Much like xikers, I love how both of them have such distinct voices that give us such contrasting vocal deliveries in every rap. It’s always so satisfying to listen to, and they wrote their own verses.
Honorable mentions (songs that aren’t “rap-centered” but have rap verses that slap):
- Stray Kids – Domino: As soon as Changbin started the song I knew I was gonna love it. The way they say “han beon kkattakamyeon domino” is such an earworm. Of course Han also ate and this is the song where I heard Felix actually rap for the first time. They’re seriously talented rappers and 3Racha are talented lyricists.
- xikers – Witch: Shameless xikers promotion again. Sumin and Yechan ate, but Minjae’s rap verse is the best part of the song and it’s not even that long, his delivery is so on point and the rhyme scheme is crazy, AND he wrote it by himself. Such a skilled musician.
- Ateez – Crazy Form: Both Mingi and Hongjoong’s verses ATE, particularly Hongjoong, dude his delivery is so on point every. single. time. His vocal color especially shines here and I just love his laugh as a staple in most of his verses. It’s so attractive and he’s so cool.
- WJSN/Cosmic Girls – Last Dance: Exy ate down with the lyricism and the delivery, her chocolatey deep tone is so delectable and so addictive, it’s easily the best part of the song. Last Dance is criminally underrated and more people should listen to it because Exy really makes a lot of WJSN’s songs.
