We have our “Kill this Love”, our “Into the New World”, our “Love Killa” etc etc etc. Songs that are amazing but are frequently used (it would be fun to have a chart visual of the most commonly used K-pop songs in survival shows)
There’s so many great k-pop songs out there that are not really used in survival shows. As the number of idol survival shows increases, I hope we get a greater variety of songs for trainees to cover. I’m writing some recommendations, and I would love to hear you guys’ thoughts! (I included some b-sides, but mainly promoted tracks)
For Boy Groups:
– For vocally-focused performances: (1) Exo ‘What is Love’; (2) NCT U ‘Without You’; (3) Exo ‘Lucky’
– For rap-focused performances: (1) H.O.T ‘Warrior’s Descendant’ (Ik, I’m practically a dinosaur)
– For a regular performance: (1) Exo ‘History’; (2) Infinite ‘Back’; (3) SHInee ‘Married to the Music’/’Dream Girl’; (4) BIGBANG ‘Monster’; (5) TVXQ! ‘O’
For Girl Groups:
– For vocally-focused performances: (1) Red Velvet ‘One of these Nights; (2) After School ‘Shampoo’; (3) Taeyeon ‘Time Lapse’
– For rap-focused performances: (1) Stray Kids ‘Chronosaurus’ (I would also love for trainees to self compose lyrics)
– For a regular performance: (1) CSJH The Grace ‘One More Time, OK?’; (2) Girl’s Day ‘Don’t Forget Me’; (3) Kara ‘Mamma Mia’; (4) 2NE1 ‘I Love You; (5) Dejavu ‘Run’ (now this is an obscure one)
As you can tell, I do have a second gen bias, so these recommendations are a bit skewed, but nevertheless I tried to select songs that I would absolutely love trainees to perform. I think it’s crucial to revitalize interest in older K-pop, and it would be fun to see the current generation performing different songs from the regular fanfare
