UNIS is becoming the butt of the joke in 5th gen K-pop

I’ve noticed that UNIS has become a bit of a punching bag among 5th gen fans, especially in circles that stan groups like ILLIT or Hearts2Hearts. Despite their company clearly investing a lot into their promotions—high production MVs, frequent variety appearances, good styling—they’re still not breaking through.

It’s not even just about numbers (though their charting and album sales are underwhelming compared to their peers). It’s the tone people use when they talk about them—sarcastic TikToks, memes calling them “flops”, and comments that barely hide the mockery. It’s clear they’re not taken seriously.

They’re not lacking in talent, but the public isn’t connecting with them. And instead of people being neutral, there’s almost this weird satisfaction in watching them struggle.

It’s probably because they’re a mostly minor group, and their concept choices are… bold. They’re not really following the trendier routes that are dominating 5th gen right now.
