Recently, Lisa’s company Lloud posted a message on Instagram addressed to the victims of the Los Angeles fire. In the second image of the post, some organizations that people could donate to were highlighted, contributing to help the victims, however, the post was flooded with comments from solo fans and other fandoms, bringing up issues related to P******ne criticizing Lisa for not commenting, even though she has made significant donations two occasions.
This situation led me to reflect on something that had been bothering me for a while: do some (not all) K-pop fans really care about the causes they defend, or are they just using these causes as an excuse to attack other idols? It is important to question whether engagement in social issues is genuine or just a tool to perpetuate rivalries and hostilities within the community.
A clear example of this is Namjoon (RM), we know he has made mistakes in the past and admirably has recanted and shown continued growth over the years. However, many K-pop fans insist on resurrecting these mistakes as a form of attack, ignoring their effort and evolution. What is most intriguing is that other idols who have made similar mistakes, without even apologizing, do not face the same pressure. This highlights the selectivity of some fans, who choose which idols to charge and which to ignore, often basing their actions on personal preferences rather than coherent principles.
Furthermore, the hypocrisy of many fans regarding issues such as cultural appropriation, the use of AVVE and humanitarian causes, is alarming. Many criticize these practices when carried out by idols from other fandoms, but are condescending or even defensive when it comes to their favorites. This selective behavior weakens legitimate causes and diverts the focus from necessary discussions, making them tools of attack rather than catalysts for change.
It is essential that as fans, we ask ourselves: are we really fighting for justice and change, or are we just using these causes to fuel disputes and rivalries? We need to foster a healthier, more coherent environment where criticism is constructive and based on principles, not personal preferences or resentments.
