To preface this, I want to say that I do stan aespa and have recently went to their concert in Charlotte as well so in no way am I trying to hate on them.
People have said that their stage presence has grew so much and are really good performers compared to in their earlier days when they had a hate train against them for a lack of stage presence. While it is true they have improved a little bit, it’s not to the extent that people claim to be. They still seem to go through the motions and they rarely deviate from the standard choreo to do anything to engage the audience. The effort they put into their choreo is perfect, but it still feels to rehearsed. Another issue that’s not their fault is lip syncing because they as performers cannot fully engage into the performance as they’re too focused on perfect choreo. Idek why SM doesn’t let them sing since their choreo isn’t even that difficult
I think the reason why people think their stage presence is so much better is due to the concept change in their music. Their earlier songs like next level and savage were very monotone and hard to “vibe” to per se. With songs like spicy or supernova, it’s easier to put in more dynamic faces and strength into their movements which does elevate their performance.
I don’t think it’ll ever be possible to make them “star performers” until SM lets them sing live. It’ll engage the members in the performance much more, the choreo will be more dynamic since the singing members are able to show they are using their vocals through body language rather than lip syncing, and the effort for high notes and harder vocals can be enjoyed much better by the fans.
I still love them to death though and definitely will be tuning into future comebacks, but I don’t believe they have that great of stage presence as people claim they have. What are y’all’s thoughts?
