I got into K-pop in 2020 and while I really was only interested in BTS for the majority of that year, I got into K-tube and slowly started learning about the “basics” of how K-Pop is set up, the companies, the “legends”, one-hit wonders, etc. etc. Taemin, who is clearly a living legend at this point, was active in SuperM and as a soloist at the time (I believe), as his group members were in the military. NCT was too big of a group for me at the time, so I partially got to know SM groups through SuperM (lmao). Anyways, I checked out Taemin’s recent releases and I fell in love with both Criminal and Idea. But when I checked out both parts of Never Gonna Dance Again, I found that I didn’t like any of the B-sides. It’s not that I didn’t understand or appreciate the artistry, the references and the talent poured into the creation of the songs, it just wasn’t *hitting* for me. I checked out Taemin’s other stuff, I liked most of his title tracks but didn’t really vibe with any of his B-sides. It sucked, bc I can see the vision and that not only Taemin is incredibly talented, but also the team(s) he works with to bring his vision as well.
Of course, I’m not beating myself up over it but it made me wonder if anyone else started checking out a K-pop artist, expecting/wanting to like most of their stuff (bc you can see the hype and the detail/hard word/talent that goes into it), then ending up not being into it?
