5th gen idols that fit the definition of the word to you?
just prefacing this with i only listen to boy groups, and i’d love to hear any girl group equivs!
i’ve been a kpop fan for about 15 years at this point, but for some reason 5th gen has been particularly fun for me! i wasn’t the biggest fan of 4th gen and found a lot of groups i liked weren’t really fulfilling the necessities i looked for between individual members, member relationships, group management, etc. it felt a bit like a filler gen with a few hidden gems.
but, i’ve been super impressed with 5th gen so far and i think there’s a lot of idols that have made it particularly fun! a few that come to mind are zhang hao and sung hanbin from zerobaseone, kim woonhak and myung jaehyun from boynextdoor, and nct wish as a whole. to me, all of them really encapsulate what i personally seek in idols. they all seem to love their jobs, love performing, and all have pretty fun/quirky personalities. not only that, they all seem to be kind but firm in their words and they seem to be trusted by the people around them.
(sorry for saying “seems” so much, i realize that none of us can really know who they are as people, so i’m treading lightly…)
nct wish in particular has been such a golden group for me! i love their strong identity and more than that, i absolutely love all of the members and how they interact with each other. everything i learn about their friendship makes my heart hurt a bit, especially the fact that they want to dorm together and they bought friendship bracelets for themselves. and with riku talking about his hiatus recently and talking very highly of how the menbers helped him through such a hard time in his life and some of the members getting emotional when he was talking about it…… they really are a cohesive, loving team and every member is essential for the type of bond they have. something i really love is how the leader, sion, talks about them. it seems that their trust in him was never assumed and he worked hard to earn their trust and he talks about how they all listen to him well, while he also teases all of them restlessly. i just think it’s such a refreshing dynamic to see in kpop.
sung hanbin is another beaming example of “idol” to me — he was very active in his communities predebut and i haven’t heard anything negative about him. he’s humble and kind, while also being insanely talented. he seems to speak up when he wants, and is able to maintain a good relationship with his members and other idols. his personality is bright, kind, and funny, and i love his inside jokes with others! i always think of him fondly and think he’s been an amazing idol to be a fan of.
so, what groups / idols fit your definition of the “perfect” idol or group? what does “idol” mean to you?
